Welcome to Meet Your Heroes, a segment dedicated to the wonderful members of the geek community. Today we’re talking to Megan from The Nerdy Girlie.
Tell us a little bit about yourself! Who are you, where are you from, and what do you do?
Hey nerds! I am Megan Gotch, The Nerdy Girlie! I live in Los Angeles, CA and LOVE IT! I plan on never leaving! I am a blogger, a photographer and a social media manager.
What about being a geek and the geek community is most important to you?
I began my blog as a way to find my geek community. I had just attended my fourth San Diego Comic Con and felt inspired to keep the con culture and vibe all year long. I’ve been lucky enough to make an amazing set of geek friends. SDCC is like our family reunion each year!
How did you find yourself part of the geek community? What is your origin story?
I’ve always felt different. I wasn’t one of the cool kids and that use to bother me. NOW that I’ve discovered myself, I’m so happy with who I’ve become and I am continuing to become. I’ve found amazing people through my blog and Twitter that I would have never met otherwise. I am so thankful for the amazing nerd community we have. I love you nerds!
We’re all about being your own hero here. What is something about yourself that makes you feel powerful, confident, or courageous?
Being small and a girl always made me feel like I couldn’t be strong. I never thought of myself as such. It wasn’t until I made the biggest life change that I found out just how tough I am. Four months ago I began going through a divorce. Each step has been extremely difficult in the moment. So much so that I never thought I could be happy again. But each step has brought me clarity and it’s taken less and less time to recover from the “bad” stuff. In four months, I have become the confident women I’ve always wanted to be.
What’s your secret weapon against a terrible, no good, very bad day?
Recently every day while walking into work I talk to myself. I pump myself up for the day. I think happy thoughts and remind myself of how amazing my life is. Compared to the entire world…I have it great. Sometimes it is hard to remember that when you are stuck in your own little bubble.
How did you get started with blogging? What’s your favorite part about it?
I started a personal blog in 2009 to chronicle my move to San Diego and to keep family and friends updated on what I was doing there. In 2012 I began The Nerdy Girlie and have never looked back! My favorite part of blogging and the reason that I began in the first place is to share my love of all things nerdy and build a nerd community.
Lately, you’ve been posting more personal stories to your blog. How has that transition been? What has the reception been like?
I love posting my personal pieces. It wasn’t until recently that I felt inspired to do so. I don’t do them often, I only have three as of yet, but they are extremely helpful. I was hesitant to post my first one, all of them actually. But the response I have gotten has been amazing. The comments and tweets and emails I receive warm my heart so much. I cannot believe I get to have this nerd community. We have some amazing people out there. I am so happy that my vulnerability can help others as well as help myself heal and grow.
Thank you so much for taking the time to chat with us! Any projects you want to plug? How can we find you around the web?
I love you girls so much! I actually have ONE new project that I am about to launch. It is a podcast with Being Geek Chic’s Liz Giorgi called Love Long & Prosper. Both she and I began this single journey together and have helped each other every step of the way. With our new podcast, we hope to help others by sharing our difficult journey into strong and successful nerd women!
